Themes

JSS publishes works on any of the following issues:

  • Policy Issues / Social Justice
  • Renew / Reuse / Recycle / Reduce
  • Gardening / Aeroponics / Hydroponics
  • Large Scale Sustainable Agriculture
  • Clean Water / Clean Energy
  • Emerging Technologies
  • Business & Economics

Within any of these broad themes, contributors may move in any number of directions: quantitative research, qualitative research, and pedagogical or action research contributions are welcome, as are well-researched creative pieces and “how-to” contributions.


Submission Genres

Research & Theory Articles

Researched scholarship on theories, empirical research, quantitative or qualitative studies, or similar focus. These are peer-reviewed, 5,000+ words or more, and written according to the Chicago Manual of Style (Endnotes-Bibliography). Please submit the article in MS Word (.docx form). If you are integrating images, videos, or other multimedia components, please note where they are located in the text by inserting a parenthetical with the name of the file, with its extension. Please submit all multimedia files separately, using the same name for the file as presented in the text parenthetical. Limit all multimedia audio or video to 10 minutes or less.

Sustainable Practice

Researched scholarship focusing more on how to do something (including engaging in pedagogical or action research, as well as personal or community sustainable practice. These are peer-reviewed, 2,000+ words or more, and written according to the Chicago Manual of Style (Endnotes-Bibliography). Please submit the article in MS Word (.docx form). If you are integrating images, videos, or other multimedia components, please note where they are located in the text by inserting a parenthetical with the name of the file, with its extension. Please submit all multimedia files separately, using the same name for the file as presented in the text parenthetical. Limit all multimedia audio or video to 10 minutes or less.

Book Reviews

Summary and analysis of new manuscripts in Sustainability or manuscripts that significantly intersect sustainability. If you would like to suggest a book for review, please contact the editors first; reviewers should have some expertise in the manuscript discipline. These are reviewed by the editors, up to 1,000 words, and written according to the Chicago Manual of Style (Endnotes-Bibliography). Please submit the article in MS Word (.docx form).

Editorials

Commentary on recent developments in sustainability. These are reviewed by the editors, up to 1,000 words, and written according to the Chicago Manual of Style (Endnotes-Bibliography). Please submit the article in MS Word (.docx form).  Well done, professional grade cartoons will also be considered.

Creative Works

Fiction, non-fiction and poetry submissions. These are peer-reviewed and well researched. Fiction and Non-fiction up to 2,000 words, no multiple submissions, contemporary and speculative (high science fiction) genres preferred . Please submit the text in MS Word (.docx form). If you are integrating images, videos, or other multimedia components, please note where they are located in the text by inserting a parenthetical with the name of the file, with its extension. Please submit all multimedia files separately, using the same name for the file as presented in the text parenthetical. Poetry up to 30 lines, no multiple submissions, formal styles and experimental preferred. Please submit the text in MS Word (.docx form). Limit all multimedia audio or video to 10 minutes or less.

Art

Any genre, including performance art video. Please submit a single high quality image of the work as a .jpg file, or submit a video of no more than 10 minutes.


Submission Guidelines

For all submissions, please provide the following:

  1. A cover page with the title of the work, author’s name, institutional affiliation, theme (see above), submission genre (see above), and two or three most relevant academic disciplines appropriate for the paper.
  2. A separate brief bio that includes your highest degree completed and/or current position title and any other publication or presentation information.

Remember:

  1. DO NOT use your name anywhere in the document.
  2. Follow the guidelines specified for the appropriate submission genre (see above).
